Accutane: Its Uses and Treatment

Accutane, or isotretinoin, is a retinoid most commonly used for the treatment of persistent, severe acne – the type that has resisted treatment with antibiotics or other drugs.  This drug is actually a vitamin A retinoid found in the human body in small amounts.  Accutane treats nodular acne and it works by slowing down the manufacture of the natural substances in the body that cause acne eruptions to take place.  It is also used to treat acne rosacea and other acnes that may cause psychological or physical scarring.

Isotretinoin was first created for use in chemotherapy treatment for brain cancer, pancreatic cancer and other severe cancers.  It can kill off cells that develop fast.  It is still used in the treatment of cancer and some serious skin conditions.

Accutane is available only by prescription from your doctor.  It is taken by mouth in capsule form.  It should be swallowed, not chewed and taken with a full glass of liquid.  For best results, Accutane should be taken with a meal.  When your doctor prescribes accutane, you should follow the directions on the prescription label carefully – being certain not to exceed the recommended daily dosage.  If you miss a dose, wait until it is time for the next dose and take the next capsule then.

As with any other medication, you should keep your doctor informed about what other medications you are taking, including vitamins and herbal supplements, to prevent negative drug interactions.  Continue to see your doctor regularly while taking accutane.

There is no need to be on a special diet while you are taking accutane.  You may continue with your normal eating habits.

Accutane should be stored in its original container, at room temperature, and away from excessive moisture and heat.  For this reason, storing the drug in your bathroom is not recommended.
